During the Easter holidays, Auckland Youth & Community Centre and neighbouring Woodhouse Close Church & Community Centre in Bishop Auckland was transformed into a space centre and took 150 local children on an exploration of the cosmos.

A team of scientists, charity and community leaders, artists and foodbank specialists from AYCC, Gaunless Gateway, Daisy Arts, Baccanalia, Little Chefs Big Chefs CIC, Dispel Art, No More Nowt and Durham University worked together to create an unforgettable day for families in Bishop Auckland.
At the free event, local children and their parents/carers could:
- Excavate a immersive Mars surface
- Touch real meteorites from the Durham University Ogden Collection
- Make their own personalised NASA space suit, helmet and jet pack with artist Sarah Stamp
- Enter a planetarium
- Learn about fast-growing foods useful for a Mars base
