SANTALLITES in Blackhall
On Thursday 21 December 2024 (4 sleeps until Christmas) Street Cosmos hosted a SANTALLITES workshop and lunch at Blackhall Community Centre. Piggybacking on the hysteria-level excitement so close to Christmas, we asked 50 local children (and their parents and carers) to help make SatNav for Santa: small next gen ‘CubeSats‘ similar to those made at nearby science park ‘NET Park’ in Sedgefield. These geomonitoring satellites will help give the North Pole Team an edge come the Night Before Christmas.
Staff from Durham University were on hand to give extra detail into how CubeSats work, their importance for the future of the planet, and the future jobs the children might be able to get in the new space industry!
There was a special visit by the big man himself, demonstrating the physics of gravitational orbit by juggling!
